‘Brick City’ sends a Cutty Ranks vocal sample through the spin cycle, smashing it against towering melodic stabs and a hyperactive percussive line. Race car revs Doppler-effect their way past biological squelches; it gives a very Magic School Bus Season 1 Episode 3 “Inside Ralphie” kinda vibe.
B pumps the brakes hard into the transitionary titular track, churning dreamy pads and sampled material into a smooth buttermilk biscuit. ‘This Goes Out To U’ takes off from here, launching into the stratosphere on a wave of collaged material. Samples and vocal chops collide like fireworks. It’s at once overwhelming and full of simple pleasure; a real go-getter of a track that feels fresh.
P.S. HB, if you’re reading this, is that a Fluid (PS1, 1998) sample? I gotta know.🍍
