Viers - Hurt Me EP

September 27, 2019

September 27, 2019 - Turbo Recordings

Relative new-lad Viers a.k.a. Jordan Saxton has made his Turbo debut with Hurt Me, the first bright and shiny release of Turbo’s new bright and shiny enclosed 12-inch techno vinyls. Though the vinyl is inclosed in a bright and shiny sleeve, the music is more akin to the dark and mysterious material it is etched upon. These are four filthy, dirty tracks. Hide them from the sun tracks. Bring them out at night tracks. Shake your head in pleasure tracks.

In the grand scheme of the club potluck, Saxton has brought four enticing side dishes. More specifically he’s brought banchan, small Korean side dishes full of flavor set in the middle of the table for all to enjoy. Saxton has cooked each track outright, not skimping on ingredients. They are high-energy and from start to finish with little breathing room. ‘VLVX Spiral Down’ and ‘Hurt Me’ spend most of their time pumping the lo and hi frequencies to the brink of audio overload but clean mixing keeps everything in check. Like a spicy nakji bokkeum, these two cuts offer perfect options to mix into the club potluck, getting mouths salivating and bodies moving without causing too much indigestion.

‘Blow’ comes on a little darker and a little deeper. Thudding bass tickles the mind and guttural vocal snips are given free rein to reverb in and out of existence. This is a lights-out moment. Like a glass noodle japachae, ‘Blow’ weaves a near invisible web of subtle texture over a sea of bottom-end that is felt within. ‘I’m Gonna Get’ is definitely the kimchi of this banchan collection. Spicy jungle-era vocal chops are peppered throughout, providing an ethereal structure to the backbone-beat. Cheeky wind chimes tease the tastebuds with a sense of the mystical. It’s not a new formula, but its a tried and true recipe that rounds out the project nicely.

Saxton has Turbo-debuted strongly, providing an enticing array of dark, timeless techno. These tracks belong locked up in the club, used as secret side dishes to a sweaty, exhaustion-inducing meal. 🍍
