Frits Wentink, DJ Boring - Wasted Years of Pumping Iron

May 11, 2018

May 11, 2018 - Bobby Donny

I love a good sauce. Good sauces are usually made up of more than one single ingredient. An example of a good sauce is the combination of mayonnaise, ketchup, and horseradish. This sauce is creamy, tangy, and sharp. Wasted Years of Pumping Iron is like a good sauce. Frits Wentink, DJ Boring, and a smart sound selection combine to form a creamy, tangy, and sharp audio project.

Frits Wentink is a busy individual with many aliases and talents. He runs two record labels, both of which have amazing logos. They are called Bobby Donny and Will & Ink, and have been featured on this publication in the past. He and the labels hail from the Netherlands. DJ Boring is also a busy individual with less aliases but still many talents. He was created in Australia but moved himself to London which is a popular thing to do.

Wasted Years of Pumping Iron is an easily digestible, simply crafted, no-nonsense project that genuinely sounds like a collaboration, a quality that is not always apparent in collaborations. Regardless of if they did or did not, this project feels like the two producers locked themselves in a tiny room until synergy was achieved and greatness created. The project opens with ‘Oli Coony,’ a light, bouncy dance track that doesn’t rush things. In fact, this whole EP takes its time. The elements are presented to the listener in a very controlled, deliberate fashion, which provides an air of confidence within the loosely bound, groovy rhythms.

‘Oli Coony’ gives way to ‘Derek Antony.’ This track has some of the same chopped vocal samples as the A1 track, but they are presented in a much darker mood. This is definitely an eyes-closed, lights-out track. The final outing, ‘Chad Brothers,’ is brighter than the previous track, but noticeably deeper, as if one has left the dark dance cave of ‘Derek Antony’ to emerge underwater in a blue-green lagoon. Syrupy synths play around each other and the staccato percussion loops. Hints of the same vocal samples dot the track, further cementing the individual songs together into a solitary project.

Frits Wentink and DJ Boring have produced a good sauce. All three tracks have a simple, lasting, dance inducing power about them. I know from the internet that both producers are remaining busy with personal projects and new collaborations. I know from within myself that I am enjoying what has come and am looking forward to what is in store from these two shining talents. 🍍
